Regional Flyway Initiative New Project at South Dongting Lake, China

The Regional Flyway Initiative (RFI) is a groundbreaking partnership among EAAFP, BirdLife International, and the Asian Development Bank, working to restore wetlands across Asia to protect migratory birds and support local communities.
The South Dongting Lake project in China, a vital stopover for migratory birds like the Vulnerable Lesser White-fronted Goose (Anser erythropus), aims to restore nearly 12,000 hectares of wetland, benefiting both nature and local livelihoods.
The project aims for:
• Enhancing institutional capacity for integrated wetland management in South Dongting Lake
• Restoring 11.989 hectare of degraded wetlands to create habitat
• Enhancing climate resilience and improving sustainable livelihoods
• Improving knowledge and capacity of local and regional stakeholders as part of the Regional Flyway Initiative
• Clearing of poplar and reed beds
• Creating new habitat within the nature reserve to increase water storage and provide habitat for water birds
• Providing eco-compensation incentive funds to support ecological farming and aquaculture
• Promoting Yuanjiang City as an International Wetland City and sustainable eco- tourism destination
• Providing training, education and support to for reserve managers, volunteers and eco-tourism service providers
This initiative links biodiversity conservation with green development and showcases China’s commitment to wetland protection.
