Participation in the Flyway-wide activities

EAAFP Secretariat

Thank you very much for joining the World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) celebration on May 10th. The EAAFP Secretariat has just set up a report page where twenty WMBD events in the East Asian-Australasian Flyway are put together. Thanks to these activities, thousands of people had the chance to come to know about WMBD and join in on the celebrations. There were many different types of activities, involving various targeted groups including government officers, members of the media, and students of all ages.

Many of the WMBD 2017 events were self-funded by our government partners and by NGOs. However, it is notable that there were also activities voluntarily conducted by environmentally conscious individuals throughout the Flyway. Teachers, for example, wisely utilized their resources to create school activities or apply for funding in order to produce their own WMBD events. If you didn’t have the time or budget this year, please follow their example so you can plan for next year. For the countries that will be visited by migratory waterbirds after May, please choose the best time to celebrate WMBD later this year! We look forward to seeing the continued growth of this global and Flyway-wide campaign!

Recently, several new studies have shown that large population declines in certain species of migratory birds can be linked to climate change. This, in addition to the already existing threats associated with the loss and degradation of habitats, highlights the need to raise awareness very quickly and widely across various levels. Targeting decision makers, the private sector, the media, as well as young people and members of local communities should continue to be one our highest priorities. World Migratory Bird Day 2017 may be concluded, but the need to continue raising awareness did not stop on May 10th. Additional activities such as the Year of the Knots, a campaign to bring attention to the declining species, and To Our Winged Travellers, a Flyway-wide participatory art project, are ongoing throughout the year. Let’s continue to work together, make synergy, and bring about positive outcomes in our Flyway and across the globe!
