1st EAAFP Flyway Science Symposium Science For Flyways
Beijing, People’s Republic of China
16–18 October 2024

Background
With the theme, “Science For Flyways,” the inaugural science symposium of the East Asian–Australasian Flyway Partnership (EAAFP) will bring together members of Working Groups, Task Forces, Technical Sub-committee of the EAAFP, alongside invited scientists, researchers, and experts from various regions and disciplines to share pioneering studies and foster a comprehensive understanding of existing and emerging conservation threats and needs across the flyway that advancements in science and technology could address. Participants are expected to explore ways to strengthen and promote flyway-wide conservation efforts for migratory waterbirds and wetland habitats through research and technological solutions.
To demonstrate commitment to bridging flyway science, the symposium will discuss the development of a Flyway Science Strategy for adoption at the 12th Meeting of Partners (MOP12) of the EAAFP. It will serve as a strategic document that outlines directions and priorities to address knowledge gaps, develop research capacities, and promote scientific collaborations across the EAAF.

In addition to the symposium, meetings of the EAAFP Working Groups, Task Forces and Technical Sub-committee will be convened to facilitate discussions on ongoing and upcoming activities and priorities for 2025 and preparations for the 12th Meeting of the Partners (MOP12).
This symposium directly supports the goals outlined in the EAAFP Strategic Plan 2019-2028, particularly Partnership Objective 3, which aims “to enhance flyway research and monitoring activities, build knowledge and promote exchange of information on waterbirds and their habitats.” Moreover, the outcomes of the symposium are anticipated to significantly contribute to the fulfilment of various global commitments such as the Convention on Wetlands and Convention on Migratory Species, as well as relevant targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework of the Convention on Biological Diversity. Co-organised by Beijing Forestry University and the EAAFP Secretariat, this symposium is one of the key events taking place during the Global Ecological Governance Forum held from 16 to 18 October 2024. The Forum, hosted by the Fengtai District People’s Government of Beijing Municipality and Beijing Forestry University, serves as a premier international platform dedicated to addressing pressing environmental and ecological challenges through collaboration and innovation. It brings together leading experts, policymakers, and stakeholders from around the world to share knowledge, discuss strategies, and develop solutions for sustainable ecological governance and conservation.
