The first Flyway Youth Forum Pre-event press release
The first-ever Flyway Youth Forum, organized by The East Asian – Australasian Flyway Partnership (EAAFP) and Youth Engaged in Wetlands (YEW), sponsored by Hanns Seidel Foundation, will be held virtually over two consecutive weekends from 28th November to 6th December, 2020, to connect, empower and provide a platform for dialogue for future youth leaders focusing conservation of wetlands and migratory waterbirds in and beyond the East Asian – Australasian Flyway.
In the time of COVID-19 pandemic, it is a stark reminder of our relationship with nature and the future of the world. And because the future will be led by the next generation, youth should be involved and engaged in decision-making processes and implementation of actions, especially when the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework is now being discussed, which will affect the future global policy and agenda on protecting biodiversity and nature.
Embracing the ultimate key message “Connecting the Flyway Youth Leaders for Tomorrow”, the Flyway Youth Forum scheduled on the coming two weekends, 28th to 29th November, 5th to 6th December, 2020 will provide a series of activities: Honorary keynote speeches by Ms. Martha Rojas Urrego, Secretary General of Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands and Dr. Jane Goodall, Founder of Jane Goodall Institute and Roots and Shoots, and Mr. Doug Watkins, Chief Executive of the EAAFP Secretariat at the opening ceremony, followed by a stage for youth’s voice by eight youth leaders.
The next two days will be a series of capacity building workshops on Youth Advocacy in Global Policy Agendas, Effective Campaigning, Local community Engagement, Field Research & Monitoring and Environmental Justice. On the last day, a Flyway World Café which encourages dialogue between youth and speakers from diverse backgrounds in the field will be held. At the end of the Flyway Youth Forum, the participants will discuss future actions and engage in drafting a Declaration on wetlands and migratory waterbirds conservation.
Although the Forum will be focusing on the conservation of migratory waterbirds and their wetlands, it will extend the perspectives of youth through communications, interactions and training among their peers and trainers from diverse backgrounds.
